Learning as a Family

Learning as a Family

This program seeks to provide clear and reasoned principles that help us make sense of how human beings actually learn. In understanding these principles we are better equipped to create a family environment that encourages learning and whose defining features are love, curiosity, and playfulness. This program also seeks to show that force, coercion and manipulation are counterproductive and not needed for real learning to occur. A further central aim is for this program to help you create an environment that fosters your child's autonomy in a healthy way and gives your children confidence and courage to engage in the world in a meaningful way as they grow.

  • LaaF intro

A video explaining the various features of the LaaF program and how you can make the most out of it. This includes ways to connect with both Justus and other people in the program.

  • Week 1 Introduction

This week is all about sharing some of the foundational principles when it comes to relationships between adults and children, how human beings actually learn, and what is going on with this interaction between you and me via these videos.

  • W1S1 Foundations

The principles behind how we learn are basically alike for both adults and children. However, for children there is one major difference in the state they are in when compared to adults. In this first session, we will explore that difference and what that means for our relationships with children.

  • W1S2 How We Actually Learn

This session is an overview of some of the principles as to how humans actually learn. There are many ideas out there as to how to make people learn, but I am more interested in how people learn without someone trying to force them to. We look at the issue of child development and then focus on t...

  • W1S3 Am I Capable?

We tend to worry that if we take up the responsibility that our children learn as opposed to outsourcing this to a school or curriculum, then that would mean that we have to become a super-human "fount of all knowledge". I don't think either option is valid and we as humans prefer to have control...

  • Week 2 Introduction

This week is all about what part we can play in helping create that environment of learning within our families.

  • W2S1 Inspiration

In this session we start with the most important starting points when it comes to encouraging learning in our children. As noted last week, learning starts with being motivated and being motivated often comes from being inspired.

  • W2S2 Connection

As human beings we are social creatures and much of our learning comes from doing things together. The more closely connected we can be with other people the more fun and learning can occur.

  • W2S3 Conversation

As human beings, we like to talk. But what is actually happening in the roles of the listener and of the speaker? What learning are they getting out of the interaction?
